新型コロナウイルス感染症の世界的流行により史上初めて延期され、2021年に開催されたオリンピック東京2020。オリンピックの開閉会式は開催国が自国の存在感をアピールする大会の醍醐味の一つでもあり、東京五輪でも期待が高まっておりましたが、開会式は規模縮小を余儀なくされ無観客で行われました。開閉会式の演出チームは総合総括の狂言師野村萬斎氏の辞退を皮切りに椎名林檎氏ら7人のチームが解散し、その後の運営の対応に不信感を持った世界的ダンサーで演出の実質的責任者MIKIKO氏が辞任するなど人気アーティストが離脱した他、不祥事によって責任者が次々と入れ替わっており、国内からの厳しい批判に晒されていました。2021年7月23日に3時間半にわたって行われた開会式も、間延びや人手不足、センスの悪さなどを指摘されました。海外からも期待外れだったという声が上がっているものの、未曾有のパンデミックの最中に大会の開催にこぎつけた日本に温かいコメントが送られていました。

・It's very heart-melting the game included a medical professional as a flag carrier. As our first line of defence in this war against humanity, it is a well deserved recognition! Love the classic game music in the opening!

・Well now that the opening already ended and the Olympics have officially begun, I think we should support the athletes and hope they do their best (whether you thought the opening was boring or not).
さて、既に開会式が終わり、オリンピックが正式に始まった。スポーツ選手を応援し、彼らがベストを尽くすよう祈るべきだ。開会式が退屈だと思ったか、そうでなかったかに関わらずね。

・The drones were fantastic. Only the best part of this ceremony along with the wood formation of olympic rings and also kabuki and the woman playing the piano
ドローンは素晴らしかった。木で形作るオリンピックのマーク、歌舞伎と女性のピアノ演奏に加えて唯一この式の最高の部分だった。

・It looks like a continental multi-sport event than an olympics opening ceremony (excepting for the drones and the pictograms that were the awesome parts!), I love Japan and his culture, people and tradition... But from the japanese people that is creative, innovative is possible to make a better show!!!
オリンピックの開会式というよりは西洋のマルチスポーツ行事みたいだ。(ドローンやピクトグラムを除いてね。あれは素晴らしい部分だったよ！)日本とその文化、人々、伝統が大好きだけど…創造的で革新的な日本人ならもっといいショーにできただろう!!
