日本ではいつから金箔の製造が始まったのかは定かではありませんが、古墳時代の遺跡から金箔が発掘されています。金沢では朝鮮出兵の際、明の使節団を出迎えるよう豊臣秀吉に命じられた加賀藩主の前田利家が金箔の製造を始めたと言われています。江戸時代になると、政府により「箔打ち禁止令」が発令されましたが、加賀藩は密かに金箔の製造を続け、徳川幕府が崩壊し江戸箔が途絶えた結果、金沢箔が躍進します。第一次世界大戦が起きると、ヨーロッパ最大の産地であったドイツが壊滅的打撃を受け、世界的にも需要が高まりました。
